I have been an avid pet person for a long time. Throughout the years I have raised rabbits, ferrets, took care of rescue cats and shared my life with German Shepherds for the last 20 years.
I have always researched and read the lables on the bags and cans of pet food. They make it sound good in their advertizing and marketing, BUT what is really in your pets food. I have fed my german shepherds a good quality dog kibble and mixed it with a can of moist dog food.
One of my shepherds has been a picky eater and then one day he stopped wanting to eat his food, so did my other GSD. I tried changing the dry food and kept the moist canned meat. I still had problems. So I furthered my research and joined a couple of online dog groups to see what they were feeding. Some of the topics covered were diets of RAW food. I myself could not do a raw food diet. So I began cooking food that I could mix in with their dry kibble. I broil some chicken legs and sometimes beef. I remove the meat and then add a couple garlic cloves, oatmeal, brown rice, tomatoes, frozen vegteables, flax seed, sweet potatoes, carrots, peas and just let it all simmer together in the meat broth. I then remove the meat from the cooked chicken and stir that in. I scoop this mixture into serving size containers and freeze it. At feeding time I warm up the food in the micowave and mix into the dry kibble with warm water. I have been doing this for 8 months. Today my dogs will dance for their food and clean up their bowls within 10 minuets. No more fussing eating. Their coats shine and have a good feel with softness.
So this makes me wonder………..what was in the canned food that the dogs did not want to eat? I have been told to feed just dry kibble, but like me they enjoy flavor and variety.
To see my dogs eat with zest and enjoy the foods makes it enjoyable to cook this special blend of food.
You see a lot of topics about the fillers and other by-products pet food companies use to create the pet food sold at your local store but do you really know what they are eating?
wow. that’s really cool I never even thought of that. I will keep that in mind. thank you
